Never ever tell your date, “the kind of guy” you are looking for. Chances exist that he might turn an imposter and act temporarily as the man of your dreams. Yes, that happened to me. It was bizarre to me considering all of his pictures showcased a tall, lean guy with a full head of black hair and a tan. There are many reasons. This brings me to my next reason, people that are online dating lie. They lie about their age, appearance, name, location, gender, marital status, etc. The guy that cat fished me lied about his appearance and his age. Things can get dangerous in this category.

If someone lies about their age, how far off are they from the truth? If someone lies about their appearance, how would that make the other person feel? If someone lies about their name, what else are they lying about? So many questions. Why would you want to start a relationship with a potential partner by lying? Reason 5: Hookups - Not everyone is looking for a relationship. One flaw of many online daters is that they open up too quickly without even realizing it. However, being open all the time can lead to blind trust.

Eventually, allowing them to look into your open book personality could cause harm to you, in the form of extortion, violence, and so on. Reason 7: Safety - You always have to keep your safety in mind. This brings me to online dater's safety. I give this advice to my friends all the time: Do not get in a car with someone you do not know. Just because you messaged them for a few days or weeks does not mean you know them. Drive alone and meet your date at the destination. Think about it, your safety should come first.

This means you need to know and understand that kidnapping can always happen. The same goes for a roofied drink, whether you're the man or the woman.

The person sitting opposite you at that dinner table may have some bad quirks, overbearing being one of them. When I say that an online dater can be overbearing, I mean that they may track you down on social media platforms or email sites. Which means stalking through applications versus in person. Reason 9: Stealers - Your information could potentially be hacked. Stolen data is always in the back of my mind whenever I download an application that requires me to input personal information.

What is this app using my information for? Will others be able to steal my information and use it for purchases or fraudulent behavior? Reason Discomfort - Uncomfortable topics may be brought forward. We both know that someone you met in person would not be able to face you and ask you such questions.

Reason Judgmental - As a previous online dater, I can say with confidence that you will become picky. Because online daters have to deal with all of the above, they start to become judgmental and picky in their search endeavors. I know this happened to me. I started to see options that either scared me or turned me off and I now have escalated and above average expectations.

Might not be great going forward, but online dating did change that for me. Rejection can happen immediately or it can happen after the two of you swipe right on one another or it can happen after a date.

COVID does not make it easy. Ghosting people is easier than ever. Cat fishing people is not just something done on a show. Liars are more prevalent. The hookup culture is getting worse. Being too open can have its downsides. Safety should always come first. People can and will be overbearing to an uncomfortable extent.

Some people will breach and steal your information. Uncomfortable topics will not be avoided. You will become more judgmental as time goes on. Rejection is always a possibility. Look your best. Be on time. are obvious. Most of us have common sense. Please do not insult what little dignity we retain we are searching online for dating advice. We know we are stooping pretty low. The modern dating world is confusing enough as it is. Advice regarding dating etiquette only makes matters worse via its innumerable inconsistencies.

What we need is a neat, but modernized, set of steps to follow, not a sea of different approaches urging us to do wildly different things. Fist bumps are awesome. And yet some so-called "dating experts" are against their deployment in dating scenarios! aamylindholm, CC-BY, via flickr. All individuals taking advice from random websites on the Internet are suspending a little disbelief, attempting to pretend that the sources they refer to are actually trustworthy.

It is, however, impossibly difficult to pretend to trust online sources when so many prove themselves to be blatantly wrong. I came across one article from an actual print publication preaching against the use of high fives and fist bumps on dates. If even somewhat trustworthy sources are giving bad advice, how on earth can the socially inept trust anything they read?? Though I understand it would be impossible for dating experts to consider every possible situation a socially inept dater may encounter, they could certainly be a little more creative when imagining potential problems.

Dating experts might even do a little research to find out what difficulties people face. Consider the very complicated issue of dealing with software bugs. When user manuals fail, folks often open up forum threads and work out the problem from there, leaving behind a trail of problem solving for others to find. It is true that people also turn to forum threads seeking dating advice But the people hanging around and answering their queries are often just as clueless as those in the present quandary.

Can we not have a happy medium? The biggest danger the socially inept face when dating is the minefield of unspoken rules and understandings of which they are unaware. Though many norms and expectations surrounding dating are regional and different across social groups and various cultures, online dating experts can still do more to address these. It is better to be aware of unspoken dating norms from one culture than to know of none at all!

My apologies for the rant, but after encountering so many problems and hearing of various ignorance-related disasters from my buddies, I really wanted to give the so-called dating experts online a stern talking-to. Though they may never read this, I want them to know that YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS!

I now open the floor to you. Have you ever stumbled across an unspoken dating rule that nobody had explicitly told you about from the outset? What do you think the more naive among us miss out on when it comes to dating? Shares your lessons, tips, and tricks in the comments below.
